hi,

I'm Katie.

Born and raised in Bellingham, Washington, I found my way to Gonzaga University in the fall of 2015. Currently a senior, I am majoring in public relations and journalism. I'll be entering the real-world in May, 2019.

I am a PNW girl through and through. Growing up in Bellingham has made me a very scenically- greedy person. On any given day I can go to the ocean, go to the San Juan Islands or take a trip to Mt. Baker. These are just a few of the many amenities I've been blessed with while living in Bellingham.

Outside of being a student, I serve as a copy editor, news editor and Promotions Specialist for Gonzaga's weekly paper, The Gonzaga Bulletin. Before assuming my current role, I worked as a staff writer, news editor, head news editor and managing editor. I have also freelanced for the Spokesman-Review.

I also have the privilege to be working as the Public Relations Intern for a nonprofit in Spokane, called Odyssey Youth Movement. This organization is dedicated to bettering the lives of LGBTQ+ youth.

In addition to my work in journalism and public relations for The Bulletin, I served as an office aid at Logan Elementary in Spokane, Washington during the school year. During school breaks I worked at a little diner in my hometown.

In my free time, I love to read. Specifically science-fiction, fantasy and memoirs, but I'm a sucker for a solid historical novel. I also love binge-watching Netflix, a guilty pleasure I don't truly feel guilty about.

If I'm not doing any of those things, I'm probably obsessing over a dog, whether it's mine or someone else's.

At my core, I live with four values at the forefront of my everyday life. Inclusivity, empathy, integrity and love. Currently, we live in a very culturally divisive climate, which makes it easy to forget about others' needs, desires and feelings. At the end of the day, everybody is somebody's person, and it is crucial to always be treating one another like so.

Inclusivity

Empathy

Integrity

Love

A significant influencer in why I hold these core values so closely to my heart is because of the education I received at Gonzaga. A Jesuit, humanistic approach to my education taught me what it means to be a woman for and with others and the importance of working towards greater good. Though living in Spokane wasn't always my favorite place to be, I truly grew to love the city.

Despite my love for the green-ness that is Bellingham and a true PNW environment,  I did find a lot of beauty in Spokane.

Below is the results of an in-class assignment that helped me realize how much I grew to love Spokane.
